As a consultant working in a large neurosurgical intensive care unit, I frequently have to deal with the management of patients who have suffered injuries which lead to brain death.

In this talk I will outline the diagnosis of brain death, including brain stem death testing, and will discuss the ethical and legal issues associated with this demanding area of intensive care practice.

 

Preconditions

Reversible causes of brain stem dysfunction have been excluded.

  • hypothermia
  • drug intoxication
  • metabolic disturbance.
