EWTD and Operative exposure
Implementation of the New Deal and EWTD whilst shortening the duration of training will have a huge impact on the "finished product". These are changing times and the final road map is not set in stone. The view from the top is that foundation years will be followed by 4-6 years of seamless training with a CCT qualified specialist "fit for purpose" available to practice as a team player.
Of all the proposed changes, EWTD poses the greatest threat to operative exposure and thus surgical training and it is hard to see the QUALITY of training jobs improving to a level to compensate for the reduction in hours. Divorcing service commitment from training is the biggest hurdle the NHS will have to bare.
